Concept Designs
The concept design is everything in any commercial project. Getting this key starting block right with our clients is a core part of our service.
As part of the very early stage of the design process, the concept design may seem simple. But it’s the core element of the project on which all other decisions hang. This is as crucial in commercial architecture as it is in residential projects.
If you don’t have a strong design concept that stems from the reasons and justification for why you’ve massed the building in a certain way, why it looks a certain way, why it’s planned a certain way, why it feels a certain way, then when you’re in it you may run into problems.
Getting a building built is a lengthy and complex process, and the stronger the concept and the logic behind it, the more likely it is that the process will run smoothly. Planners also appreciate strong concepts as they will quickly understand the reasoning behind why your commercial architectural project is being created. Even if value engineering is required (cutting costs), the design concept is vital, as you go back to it and decide which are the most important elements to be retained.
The way we at Thomas Robinson Architects reach the concept design in commercial architecture has become second nature, but we bring a great deal of expertise and skill to it, which is why our designs work. Aspects such as purpose, position, environment, daylight, views, and flow are considered in depth. Everything starts with simple sketches on paper and discussions with our client to work through the core design idea. The concept then transfers to computer aided design where it can be brought to life for all parties to visualise.
Technical feasibility surveys and other reports may be necessary during this stage. Our clients and budgets are at the forefront during this stage while the design is perfected, before moving towards technical designs that are used by contractors.
