This project in the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park was a commission to design a two-storey traditional-architecture style large family home, full of light and maximising the site and wonderful views of Ben Lomond.
We designed a two-storey rectangle in plan with a single storey ancillary wing. The style is deliberately traditional in-keeping with the local vernacular architecture with a slate roof and rendered walls. The plan is arranged around a central hall and all the public rooms face the Ben Lomond view and the south light. A cupola sends light deep into the centre of the house via a circular gallery on the first floor. All main apartments and most of the less significant rooms have two natural light sources so that light is tracked throughout the day to give a feeling of well being.
The clients were particularly pleased with the traditional style and use of light in the house and the covered veranda with larch columns and a zinc roof, which offers a hint of a more contemporary Scottish architectural style and runs the full length of the front of the house. This space acts as an external room for barbequing and partying, with shelter from the unpredictable Scottish weather.
