Residential Conservation Architecture - Scotland

“Preservation is simply having the good sense to hold on to things that are well designed, that link us with our past in a meaningful way, and that have plenty of good use left in them.”

Richard Moe

Upgrading traditional, historic and listed houses

Working on traditional and historic homes, such as country houses, castles, gatehouses and homes designed by important architects across Scotland is a key part of our architectural work. We preserve and renew historic residential architecture using approved conservation skills. Practice director Tom Robinson, a RIAS Accredited Conservation Architect, leads all conservation architecture at Thomas Robinson Architects.

To do this, we have a deep understanding of how to preserve our architectural heritage while ensuring it stays standing long into the future.

We also make sure that listed homes and other significant old buildings can be lived in comfortably in 21 st -century comfort, without cutting corners or taking away the building’s innate period character.

Architectural Expertise and Technical Knowledge of Old Buildings

Our practice has the deep and expert knowledge required to treat old buildings properly and toconserve them for the long term. We consider ourselves experts in Scottish heritage architecture of all styles and ages. We also know how to get the best out of them by improving comfort and energy performance.

Tom Robinson has worked on many significant Scottish historic castles and homes in rural and urban settings, originally designed by acclaimed architects including Lutyens and Lorimer. Our focus is on paying attention to every period detail and using the right materials to upgrade listed mansions and traditional houses.

Residential conservation projects may need new architectural work in a sympathetic traditional style or by introducing contrasting modern elements. Tom Robinson is fluent in both classical and traditional detailing, as well as contemporary architecture. Historic styles can cover classical, Arts & Crafts, baronial, mid-century, and many others.
